DrugInformatics® is a web-based system designed to support the dual roles of clinical pharmacists and school of pharmacy preceptors in providing direct patient care, student experiential education, and staff pharmacist development. The system can function solely to support patient care or be coupled with student experiential activities and staff training.
In supporting patient care, the software provides point-of-care alerts to optimize drug therapy management and prevent potential adverse drug events. The alerts are prioritized and individualized to eliminate unnecessary interruptions of clinical pharmacists’ time by focusing only on relevant clinical issues defined by the clinician. Configuration of alerts is based solely on the organizations’ specifications and preferences.
DrugInformatics® performs several functions including:
- screen pharmacy and laboratory data to identify potential drug therapy issues;
- feed alerts, patient specific data, and trending information to each practitioner;
- facilitate the collection of outcome data to characterize patient care impact; and,
- provide data analysis and cost evaluation reports to help promote clinical services.
In supporting both pharmacy experiential education and staff pharmacist development, the software provides patient intervention cases as well as recommended clinical activities (e.g., patient interview, dosage adjustment, etc.) that are electronically assigned to either a student or training pharmacist. The clinical preceptors easily track and evaluate the activities which are then mapped by the software onto either the school’s stated competencies for students or the pharmacy department’s stated competencies for clinical pharmacy services.
DrugInformatics® addresses the American Council for Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) new experiential teaching and assessment standards by:
- providing a consistent set of student and pharmacist experiences;
- using standardized, reliable assessment tools and feedback; and,
- ensuring that evaluation of activities map to stated competencies.
